Hi, I’m Chip Rogers.
I’m a management advisor and coach to leaders of family businesses. As the former CEO of the Eagle-Tribune Publishing Company (my family’s business for over 100 years), I have rich experience in managing family dynamics and maximizing family members’ roles throughout a business’s many life cycles.
I inherited my family’s fourth-generation business when my father passed away in 1998 and spent seven intense years as CEO at a time of the most significant disruption in the history of the American publishing industry.
From day one as CEO, I felt every pressure of having three branches of my family relying on me to continue our legacy of growth and success. And, our industry was quickly trying to reinvent itself on the fly.
Facing tough circumstances, I chose the path of ambitious growth and challenged the industry trend: consolidation of small family newspapers by large media companies.
In seven years, I tripled the value of our business, spending $10 million in production capabilities, acquiring three new daily newspapers from Dow Jones, and created a board of directors to help direct the future of my family’s business. We even won our second Pulitzer Prize award for exceptional journalism in April 2003.
As newspapers around the nation fought to adapt to the Internet (and an era of “free”), my 104-year-old family publishing business maintained over 700 employees at its height, publishing four daily newspapers and six weekly newspapers with total weekly readership of over 352,000. All the while, I managed the increasingly complicated dynamics of family relationships within the business.
While running a successful business is tough enough, it’s maintaining family relationships within a family business that I know to be some of the toughest work there is.
I do this work not only because I lived it firsthand, but because I believe in the power of family business.
As a former CEO with rich first-hand experience navigating a family business during challenging times, today I specialize in helping family business owners think, prepare, and build for the future.
I’m a management advisor, confidant and consultant who works personally with leaders of family businesses across aspects of strategic planning, vision, creative problem-solving, maximizing family members’ positions and duties, and creating a healthier balance between business responsibilities and family life.
As a partner in helping your family business flourish, I’m dedicated to helping you – the leader of your family business – feel less alone in the scope of your duties, more momentous towards your overarching vision, and entirely aligned to the most vital business decisions that demand your attention.
You’re the leader of your family business. You’re relied upon, but no one really appreciates just how much pressure you’re under. You’re constantly making tough decisions while delicately balancing the needs and sensitivities of family members – not to mention, the employees, customers and stakeholders who are also counting on you.
As the type of leader who thinks strategically and conscientiously about the future, lately, the future has been seeming a little less predictable. You’re starting to foresee a new trend, like a shift in your industry. Maybe you’re noticing a pattern develop that could disrupt the way things have always been done. You might be witnessing family members’ roles, priorities and interests suddenly shift.
As your management advisor, confidant and consultant, my role is as much a part of your focus on continuous improvement as it is about helping you find balance, symbiosis and harmony in your family business, which so often revolve around fully addressing the needs and roles of the family.
I work with thoughtful, realistic, and strategic leaders of family businesses who are ready to embrace the support of a peer, confidant and consultant who can help them answer tough questions – and pre-empt difficult situations, before they happen.
With rich experience in leading my own family business, my role is to help you identify issues in the family and become more direct and proactive in dealing with them – before they negatively impact your family business.
- Confidant. Gain the support, understanding and camaraderie of an experienced peer whom you can trust (because I’ve been in your shoes before).
- Advisor. I offer all that I gained from leading my own family business including managing roles and responsibilities of family members, outside board recruitment, succession planning, exit planning, strategic development, leadership planning, conflict management, management recruitment, equity plans, and more.
- Coach*. Let’s create a blueprint for your personal and professional wellbeing by discussing the balance of vital business needs with your own health and happiness. Get unstuck from conflicts, better define roles and responsibilities, and solving internal communication problems.
*I’ve partnered with a highly experienced business coach, Stew Berman, who I’ve made available to help develop clarity, strategy and action around any particular goal or challenge that demands it. Between Stew’s coaching expertise and my command of family business (and sensitivity to the family business culture), we offer double-impact on issues that demand deep solutions.
